Hello Again All / Project Life week 24

Wow!!! I can't believe it's been almost a month since my last post.

Let's play catch up...

I have been super busy with a summer project, which I posted some sneaks of what I was up to on Instagram.  Well, I am still working on that project.  It is taking me more time than I anticipated, mostly because I overbooked my schedule AS USUAL.

Anyway, I am redecorating my son's room.  It all started in week 23!!!  My wonderful son and I were NOT seeing eye to eye on what clean is.  It was time for the bi-yearly super cleaning.  You know the one I'm talking about, the one where you go through all the toys that they haven't played with since the last super cleaning, yet they still argue with you to keep them.  Also, cleaning out all the nooks and crannies that kids seem to find to stuff anything and everything in when they are told to clean their rooms.  Well, while I was knee deep in toys, dirty laundry, crumpled papers and hidden candy wrappers I realized three things: This boy has enough Legos to build a small city, which of course I stepped on.  The room had more holes in the walls than a wedge of Swiss cheese.  Finally, I realized that it was dark as night in there at the brightest time of day.  So, the Legos were put back into their buckets, the unplayed with toys were given to a friend that collects items for foster children, the dirty laundry was thrown into the hamper, and the crumpled paper and candy wrappers were tossed into the trash. At this point my son and I started planned out his new room and yet another summer project was born.

All the other things that have been keeping me busy have been hosting "hangouts" for my daughter and "playdates" for my son.  Did you all know there was a difference?  Well, me not so much until I was set straight by my lovely daughter.  Gotta love tweenagers!!!  We have had multiple outdoor movie nights, which is my favorite thing about summer. We have had my best friend and her son for a visit. We were also able to get away for a camping trip.  All my other time has been spent doing the regular wife/mom stuff, with a an occasional break to put my feet up.

Until yesterday and today that is.  I have been working a PL the past two days.  Shanna Noel has a Project Life challenge up on her blog which comes with a free printable from Emily Merritt.  I loved the idea of breaking out of my comfort zone and trying something new.  In this challenge Shanna asked that we make an interactive part to our layout, which could include a flip card, hidden journaling or a simple insert.  Anything really!!! I hope you enjoy my PL layout for week 24.

As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to break out of my comfort zone and make this layout like nothing I have ever done before.  There are a few things that I have added that I have never done in my past layouts.  First, the title card is a cute envelope that I got in my very first Studio Calico scrapbooking kit. I've been holding on to it because I liked it so much, but this challenge was the perfect time to use it.  Like many that I know, my family made a summer bucket list and we made it during this week.  The list seemed to go on forever, so in this envelope I have added a list of the things that I am hoping that we will get done and as we do them I will be checking them off and adding little notes about the adventures we took.

One thing that I have added to this layout that I have never done is use my 1970's script typewriter. The ampersand card reads; when daddy is away she steals his spot.  My sweet girl is a daddy's girl for sure and when daddy is off at the fire station she snuggles in on his side of the bed with me.  I really hope she never grows out of this stage.  I really do love it.

Another interactive element that I added to my layout are flip cards.  My relaxation time is precious to me, so I highlighted this moment by creating a flip card with a orange chevron washi tape and stitched it with my sewing machine.

I had more pictures than space, which is a normal issue for me, but this time instead of adding an insert I chose to create multiple layer picture flip cards which include hidden journaling.  As you can see below I have used washi tape to connect the layers.  I made sure to cut my journaling cards 1/4" larger in height and staggered the pictures to insure that the washi tape would adhere to all of the pieces. I also added tabs to the sides of the pictures for easy lifting, and because I am OCD when I comes to fingerprints on pictures.

This set of pictures is the halting of progress in my son's room.  Is that a dark room or what?

As I mentioned in earlier posts, one of my goals this summer is to help my son gain cooking skills.  We are making yet another dessert.  They seem the easiest to get him to participate with.  He has almost mastered the cracking of eggs, but the mixer is still a bit scary to him.

Finally, I have added a flip card with hidden journaling.  I don't know about you all, but I always have that one absolutely favorite element in a layout and this is it.

I was actually working on this a few day before I saw the challenge posted on Shanna Noel's blog.  I picked up some vellum at Paper Source in Berkeley, CA while I was there for a watercolor class that Shanna was teaching at Scrapbook Territory.  I cut the vellum in to a 3x4 card and stamped it with white pigment ink.  I adhered the vellum to the orange star card with vellum adhesive which was also purchased at Paper Source.  I affixed this to a plain Project Life 3x4 journaling card with washi tape and finished it off with a zigzag stitch on my sewing machine.  I also embellished it with a paperclip fabric tag and rhinestone star.

I hope you enjoyed my Project Life layout for week 24.  If you have any questions about any of the product that I have used or how I created this layout please do not hesitate to ask.  I will respond as soon as possible.
